Sweet Potato, Apple, Sausage and Spinach Medley

Today's post might look a little familiar to some of you; I am literally copying and pasting a previous post I did several months back. I feel that it is worth reiterating especially for our newcomers...

First I should say that I hate using the word diet. The majority of the American race incorrectly defines the word diet as a strict limitation to either amounts or types of foods to take place or a specific period of time with the intentions of weight loss and/or improved health. After their "diet" is complete they will go back to the way they were eating prior to the change. This definition is much more correctly defined as dieting (still a cr@ppy word).

My Issues with the above...
Strict limitations- Only limitation should be to stick to wholenatural foods.
Specific period of time- Your entire life. Period.
Intentions of weight loss and/or improved health- A whole, natural diet and lifestyle will provide you with a healthy weight and body.
They go back to the way they were eating prior- Well, duh, that's what got you in trouble in the first place!
As defined by the all telling source of Wikipedia, "In nutritiondiet is the sum of food consumed by a person or other organism." This is how all American's should define the term. A diet should not be though of as restrictive and short term, it should be thought of as the summation of the foods you eat to provide you with the correct nourishment to lead a healthy life.

So let us take a firm hold of our dietary lifestyle. I promise that our take on nutrition will forever change your views of dieting. If you happen to hold the "conventional" definition of a diet, I challenge you to tell me in three months that you will ever go off of this diet!

As always, here is a tried and true recipe. And I mean true! Everyone in my family loves this dish; it's super easy, delicious, and totally versatile! The first time we made it with pork sausage, caraway, and nutmeg. The next time I used sweet Italian sausage, cumin and a dash of sweet and sour. Next time I want to try another pork sausage with fresh sliced ginger and some tamari sauce...

Sweet Potato, Apple, Sausage and Spinach Medley

The Food
- 2 lbs mild venison sausage
- 3 sweet potatoes
- 3 gala apples
- 2 small onions, chopped
- 2 tbs olive oil
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp ginger
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg
- Salt and pepper to taste

The Prep
Cut the sweet potatoes and apples roughly the same size, about 1" chunks

The Method
Heat olive oil (or butter!) in a stock pot over medium heat
Add onions and sweat out for about 5-7 minutes, until soft
Add venison (in batches preferably) and brown, breaking up chunks with a wooden spoon
Add sweet potatoes and spices, stir, and cover
Cook about 10 minutes until sweet potatoes are starting to get soft
Add apples and cook uncovered for about 3 minutes until apples get soft
Add spinach and take off heat
Stir it all up good (be careful not to break up sweet potatoes)
Let it cool down and savor in the deliciousness

Enjoy :)
